Exercise: Forces of Change

One of the tools I have developed is called the Forces of Change Model. It builds on pioneering research by Kurt Lewin in the 1950s on driving forces and restraining forces relating to change.

The Forces of Change model is made up of four parts:

  1. Pain: the driving forces that make you want to escape your Current World.

  2. Progress: the driving forces that move you towards a New World (a new job, working for yourself, writing a book, etc.).

  3. Fear: the restraining forces that worry you about that New World.

  4. Safety: the restraining forces that keep you stuck in your Old World.

The model is underpinned by a simple equation which states that people will only move to a New World if the combined strength of the driving forces (Pain + Progress) is greater than the combined strength of the restraining forces (Fear + Safety).
