Exercise: Stakeholder Mapping

There may be people around you who aren’t quite so enthusiastic about your plans to walk away from the corporate cash cow. Ignore them at your peril as they can create frictions and potentially block your move. They can definitely create work for you to manage.

List out your key stakeholders, starting with family, friends, dependents or creditors, colleagues, partners and think through how they might feel BEFORE you announce your decision to leave. That way you are better prepared to manage them appropriately – with minimal surprises.

This is something you will instinctively do – or formally do – in your corporate job, so just use the same approach in your private life to help ease your transition.
